Groceries stores nowadays have so many options that it can be overwhelming. As more and more research comes out about the effects of glyphosates, processed foods, artificial sweeteners, and more. Eating like our ancestors has taken on a new wave of popularity. You probably know it as paleo or primal eating.
When it comes to changing your lifestyle, nutrition is one of the best first steps! Let me tell you a little secret…Trader Joe’s will be your new best friend for this. I know for me when it came to switching my diet, I didn’t know where to go, why is organic produce so expensive?, and ooo look at those paleo brownies! I am sure you get where I am coming from.
However, when switching to a more paleo way of life, you won’t want a lot of the foods you used it. Wholesome foods such as vegetables, starchy vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, and animal products keep you fuller for longer.
Before I get too ahead of myself, if you don’t have a Trader Joe’s near you, but you have a Whole Foods (it is a lot cheaper now!) you can check out the blog here.
Trader Joe’s is a great place to buy all things primal. However, it is important to read ingredient labels! Many of the premade sauces and meals are often full of PUFA oils, artificial sweeteners, soy, and gluten. Keep in mind, you don’t need to eat paleo 100% of the time, but aim for 80-90%! Stressing about you each little ingredient isn’t good for your gut or overall health.
Here are 3 key reasons why Trader Joe’s is the best!
- PRODUCE IS CHEAP! This is the best place to buy organic product hands down. Both the fresh and frozen options are great! Plus, follow the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen guide to save even more money. I highly recommend stocking up on certain items and store in your freezer for later use. If something is too expensive (such as berries) opt for organic frozen ones!
- Affordable Organic Meats and Fish! Trader Joe’s is the only place I will go to get animal products (unless Whole Foods has a killer deal). They have a variety of chicken, turkey, beef, and pork options. I opt for the ones that say “organic” instead of “hormone, antibiotic, and/or natural” as those are not regulated. As for fish they have a great variety of fresh and frozen options too.
- Feel Free to Explore the Inner Aisles! This is the one grocery store (besides Whole Foods) that has loads of primally approved foods in the inner aisle. Many opt to avoiding the inner aisle as that is where all the processed foods are. However Trader Joe’s have loads of options such as avocado oil, ghee, 100% dark chocolate (Montezuma’s is the best), kale chips, freeze dried fruits, and more. I would still read the ingredients as some have PUFA oils and added sugar.
To make your shopping trip a bit easier I have created a complete guide to all of the offerings Trader Joe’s has! If you have a bigger Trader Joe’s (I’m jealous honestly) you’ll have more options as mine is a baby one. You can get your free guide here!
I’d love it if you’d share this with anyone transitioning to a healthier lifestyle or who just needs some help grocery shopping! Thank you for reading beautiful!
