Meal prepping has often been given a bad name. It requires too much time or it is too expensive. However, these are all myths! Meal prepping can be done within 2 hours if you plan accordingly. This is great for college students, busy parents, and those who just want to cook more at home.
What is great about meal prepping is you decide the menu. Therefore, you can choose products that are on sale and in season. The combinations are endless in what you can create. Checking out your local grocery store for a weekly circular and coupons are great ways to save money.
For equipment, all you need is a stove top, oven, and a microwave. I do highly recommend a crockpot as they are lifesavers. However, if you don’t have one it is no biggie. Now let’s get to tips and tricks to meal prepping!
Check out your grocery store’s circular
This will make it 10x easier to go to the grocery store. You will know exactly what you want. As I mentioned before, use weekly ads, printable coupons, and/or digital coupons. This will help you save money. Also, buying meats and frozen vegetables are also great ways to save money and reduce the amount of grocery store trips.
Decide what day is available for cooking
This may sound hard especially if you have homework, children, and so on. Simply look for a morning, in which you are free. I personally like Sundays as you cook your meals for the week. This doesn’t mean you can’t meal prep on a different day. It is whatever day that works best for you.
Invest in a Crockpot or Instant Pot
This is key to cutting meal prepping time in half. Throwing some chicken or pork in the crockpot is a great option. Also, you can find one pan recipe, in which you put a carbohydrate source, protein, and vegetable and cook all on one pan! That way you can focus on other aspects of you’re meal prep.
Buy in Bulk when items are on sale
Microwaveable grains and vegetables are also a great way to cut time in half. However, frozen products are often cheaper than fresh products. Do not worry brands like Bird’s Eye flash freeze their produce a peak freshness. As for rice, there are brands (such as Minute Maid), in which you can cook up a bag of rice in less than 10-minutes.
These tips and tricks are made to make your life easier. It gives you the ability to make it to your son’s baseball game or meet with friends you haven’t seen in months. Also, it takes the guesswork out of deciding what you want for dinner during the week. Trust me, you won’t regret it once you try meal prepping once!
